Bill grew up in Toronto, Canada, and did his undergraduate degree in instrumentation and control engineering at the University of Cambridge, England. He then conducted his PhD studies in systems biology at Harvard University with Adam Cohen and Sean Megason, where he developed approaches to image and control electrical activity of developing cardiomyocytes in live zebrafish embryos and established the timing mechanisms underlying the first heartbeats.
